SPECIAL  INFANTRY   UNITS

The French Army always included special infantry units, usually battalion-sized ;  formed  for emergencies  or for specialized combat missions . These  commonly  were referred to as " Troupes  Hors Ligne" - " outside "  or " in addition to "the standard formations  of the regular service. They were generally  considered  light infantry  and so used   its terminology.
